The current lowers the electric potential of the metal surface such that it significantly slows down corrosion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the technology used, it is possible to implement&nbsp;<strong>passive<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>cathodic protection<\/strong>&nbsp;with coatings and inhibitors, or&nbsp;<strong>active<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>cathodic protection using sacrificial anodes or impressed current<\/strong>&nbsp;to counteract faults and gaps in the coating caused during installation or by deterioration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After they are commissioned, these systems must be\u00a0<strong>monitored<\/strong>\u00a0to assess their effectiveness and to carry out any maintenance, if required. To this end,\u00a0<strong>cathodic protection measuring points<\/strong>\u00a0are identified on the distribution, transport, and storage networks during the design stage. By acquiring the tube-to-ground potentials of the pipeline to be protected,\u00a0<strong>manual checks<\/strong>\u00a0can be scheduled on the measuring points.
